Review: "Snow Like Ashes" (Snow Like Ashes #1) by Sara Raasch

Synopsis:
A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

My Review:

I have to say that at first this book was of to a slow start. But it started getting really good once I kept reading. The story was fantastic and amazing, and reminded me of a likeness of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series.

My liking of the protagonist, Meira, was kind of off and on; sometimes I liked her fierceness, and sometimes I thought she was acting too much like a brat. I loved Theron and I hope that's who Meira ends up with at the endgame. His thoughtfulness and supportive nature made me swoon. He truly makes Meira a better person. Mather is weak, and if he truly loved Meira he wouldn't have betrayed her in the way that he did. All I know is, Meira better not end up with Mather or I will be pissed.

The revelations towards the end weren't surprising, as I had already guessed it (I'm good at guessing how a story will end) but it was still great. The end battles were written very well. The treatment of the Winter people reminded me of Avatar: The Last Air Bender. I definitely can't wait to read more.

Favorite Quotes:
"This" I lower my chakram. It's now aimed at the captain's left thigh. "They gave it to me and said throw! I don't even know how it works-" - Meira
There will always be a they in your life, Meira. They make decisions; they mold your future. The trick is to find a way to still be you through it all" - Theron
